The visual novel (and anime adaptation of) Rewrite by Key follows high school student Kotarou Tennouji, who uses his “Rewrite” ability to investigate supernatural mysteries with five girls from the Occult Research Society/Club. Their investigations soon entangle them in a secret war between two factions, Gaia and Guardian, who are fighting over the fate of the world and a powerful entity known as the “Key” (not to be confused with the other Key).

Featured in the image are the female members of the Occult Research Society/Club: Kotori Kanbe (front/middle) is Kotarou’s upbeat childhood friend who has a deep love for gardening and a mysterious connection to the forest. Chihaya Ohtori (rear) is a clumsy, high-spirited transfer student who often bickers with Kotarou and possesses immense physical strength. Lucia Konohana (right) serves as the strict, glove-wearing class representative with a sharp tongue and an extreme obsession with cleanliness. Shizuru Nakatsu (far right) is a shy girl who wears an eyepatch for reasons unknown to Kotarou or others and expresses her kind nature through her actions rather than words. Lastly, Akane Senri (left) is the cynical, high-level gamer and president of the Occult Research Club/Society, known as the “Witch” for her mysterious aura.

An Introduction to Japanese Anime

Anime, the vibrant and visually distinct style of animation originating from Japan, has transcended its roots to become a global cultural phenomenon. Known for its expressive characters, intricate plots, and diverse genres, anime is far more than just “cartoons.” It is a powerful storytelling medium that has captured the hearts of millions of fans worldwide, influencing art, fashion, and entertainment. From its early hand-drawn roots to its modern digital artistry, anime continues to push the boundaries of animation and narrative.

Fun Fact #1

The “Godfather of Anime” also created a famous manga. Osamu Tezuka is a legendary figure who pioneered many of the techniques and visual styles we now associate with the medium, including large, expressive eyes. He also created the iconic manga Astro Boy, which was later adapted into one of the first and most influential anime series.

Fun Fact #2

A single anime film has its own dedicated color palette. The 1988 cyberpunk classic Akira was a landmark film for its stunning visuals. The creators reportedly used over 50 new colors which were made specifically for the movie, particularly to bring the dark and detailed nighttime scenes of Neo-Tokyo to life.

Fun Fact #3

The longest-running animated show in the world is an anime. The anime series Sazae-san, which depicts the life of a typical Japanese housewife and her family, holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running animated TV series. It has been on the air since 1969 and has over 7,500 episodes, making it a beloved weekly tradition for many Japanese families.

Fun Fact #4

An anime film was the first non-Disney/Pixar film to win an Oscar. Spirited Away, the acclaimed film from Studio Ghibli, made history in 2003 by winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. It was the first, and for many years the only, anime to achieve this honor, breaking a long-standing dominance by American animation studios.

More Than Just Animation

From its humble beginnings to its modern-day global reach, anime has become a powerful form of entertainment and artistic expression. It is a testament to the creativity of its creators and the passion of its fanbase that this medium, once a niche interest, is now an undeniable force in pop culture, with a rich history full of fascinating and often surprising stories.
