When downloading and installing this patch, keep these additional remarks from the patch publisher in mind:

• Currently there’s no English or Chinese translation.
• The only way to run the 2nd append scene is via loading the included the save in game.
• The ability to access Ayaka’s 2nd append from the append menu had been removed, as trying to run it from there would result in a hard crash. The patch developer hoped to fix it but until the xp3 encryption is broken, its unlikely.
• The save to run the 2nd append scene is on the 100th page of the loading menu.
• Completing the 2nd append scene from the save file won’t unlock any achievements.

What Does This Patch Do?

Patch Publisher’s Notes/Remarks: “This patch allows Aokana to run on Linux natively, without any compatibility software like Wine/Proton/etc. This eliminates most of the bugs related to these compatibility solutions and I guess it removes the overhead of such a compatibility layer if this was of any concern to you. The patch works on Windows too, in case you switch frequently between Windows and Linux. The patch will run the original windows code and will not suffer from the differences Linux has.”

Additional Info

The differences between Windows and Linux when playing the VN using the patch stated by the patch publisher are as follows:

• The save thumbnail uses Unity-provided bilinear filtering (like the Switch version), which provides inferior quality compared to Windows’ bicubic filtering.
• Importing a background or saving an image using the Sprite Viewer won’t work because Windows specific dialogs were used and no alternative was coded into this patch (at least for now).
• Letterboxing (black bars on sides/bottom) will be present if you resize the window manually and it doesn’t match the game’s aspect ratio, unlike the Windows version which corrects itself.
• The VN’s sound won’t be paused when minimized, unlike the Windows version.
• Apparently the VN tries to set the cursor on Windows for things like prompts and the gallery. Even with the original Windows version, this behavior was never observed even though it should’ve worked. In any case, this wasn’t ported to Linux.

Patch Publisher’s Notes/Remarks: “In order not to delay the release of the main patch, we skipped some of the polish from the EX/ME script. We have tried to make these as enjoyable as possible with the translated material presently available. Thus some of the more critical new lines amidst the otherwise translated scripts have already been translated, but not all of them. These extra patches give EX/ME working minigames, but in return they have a certain amount of untranslated lines here and there, for systemic reasons.

There are also known issues that would’ve been too much work to fix for this release – the biggest one is one where lines with the same Japanese text receive the same translation everywhere in the script. This causes some errors in minigames, but also makes some lines appear rather weird at places in the script. You will not find new content in the routes with this patch, because that is the greater part of the problem itself. Instead you will get THE original Little Busters! routes in all their glory. All new content beyond that will have to wait for its appropriate releases.

For those of you that have already read Little Busters!, our project will provide a fresh experience with a new translation. The project is split into 2 parts, Home Run Standard Edition, and Home Run Complete Edition.

• Standard Edition: “Initially we will be retranslating the entire game and releasing it as a patch for English Edition on Steam. Once the translation is completely finished we will also look into supporting other releases of the game such as the prior Reallive builds (which will provide benefits such as uncropped 4:3 backgrounds and a different user interface). The goal of Standard Edition is to provide a fresh and improved translation for Little Busters! As a team, we are very happy with the quality of the official translation – however we feel that a new translation can improve the experience!”

• (1): If you have problems with the subtitles, you probably do not have DirectVobSub/VSFilter installed. Search for and install xy-vsfilter to remedy this. They’ve also provided a hard-subbed OP movie (courtesy of Ulrezaj) for the benefit of those who can’t get the soft subs working or have them display with ugly fonts, which is what’s provided in the link. To add the EN-subbed VN opening movie, extract and move the video file to the VN’s “MOV” folder, then remove the op00.ass video file and replace it with op00.mpg video file. This replacement is a H.264/AAC/MKV video file. If the replaced video file doesn’t play, you may be missing a system H.264 decoder.
• (2): A word-wrap and voice patch v1.0 was also available for this English translation patch, which adds word-wrapping throughout the VN and about 1500 extra voice clips (from the PSP version for side characters); unfortunately, the download link and the patch itself was taken down (at the request of a 3rd party) for violating Mediafire’s ToS; the last download link that still works from Wayback Machine requires you to complete a CAPTCHA prompt, which is broken since you can’t see the letters and numbers to complete it.

Patch Installation Guide

Download the zip file that contains the patch. Locate the folder that has the Little Busters! English Edition executable (which should be labelled as “LITBUS_WIN32.exe”). This will be your Steam folder followed by “steamapps\common\Little Busters! English Edition”. From the downloaded zip file, unzip it to extract the D3D11.dll file, then copy that file into the Steam folder that contains the VN’s files.

In the event that you want to uninstall the patch and restore the VN’s original state, simply delete the D3D11.dll file from the “Little Busters! English Edition” folder.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR SYSTEMS EQUIPPED WITH NVIDIA GPUS

This patch doesn’t work on systems using NVidia GPUs. Fortunately, there’s a setting in the NVIDIA control panel that makes the patch work. The setting to enable is “Multi-Frame Sampled AA (MFAA)”. This extra step is only required on systems with NVidia GPUs; if your system is using an AMD or Intel GPU, you can safely ignore this.

How to enable MFAA:

• Right-click on the desktop, select “NVIDIA Control Panel” (for Windows 10 users), or select “Show more options”, then select “NVIDIA Control Panel” (for Windows 11 users).
• In the left pane, under “3D Settings”, click “Manage 3D Settings” then in the main window, click the “Program Settings” tab.
• Under “1. Select a program to customize:”, click the Add button. In the window that pops up, click “Browse…”
• Navigate to the “Little Busters! English Edition” Steam folder (the same one that has the patch installed) and double click “LITBUS_WIN32.exe”.
• In the box below “2. Specify the settings for this program:”, find the “Multi-Frame Sampled AA (MFAA)” setting and change the setting to “On”. Then click “Apply”.

What does this do and why it’s needed: the actual MFAA feature has no effect on Little Busters VN itself. However, enabling MFAA makes NVIDIA’s driver disable a feature (driver command list support) which is incompatible with the patch.
